Industry News Trados Acquires Rights to The S-Tagger(tm) Technology International Translation and Publishing, Ltd. ("ITP") and Trados GmbH ("Trados"), have announced the acquisition of ITP's The S-Tagger(tm) by Trados. According to the companies the deal, concluded between Technical Directors, Tom Grogan (ITP) and Jochen Hummel (Trados), represents a further strengthening of ties between the two organizations. As part of the deal, Robert Barany, Chief Developer of The S-Tagger(tm), joined the Trados development team with effect from the beginning of April 1998. Trados, the developer of Translation Memory Technologies, has been the exclusive distributor of ITP's The S-Tagger(tm) since its release in 1996. Localization service provider ITP is a major user and promoter of Trados' Translator's Workbench for Windows(tm) (TWW) and also develops a number of complementary companion tools. ITP plans to continue to develop, maintain and support filters that allow for text held in all major DTP formats to be translated in a TWW environment, and to further cooperate with Trados in the development of relevant companion technologies. Trados announced that it is committed to maintaining and enhancing The S-Tagger(tm) products so as to keep pace with relevant new developments. Novell and Lernout & Hauspie join forces on voice-recognition Novell and translation specialist Lernout & Hauspie have signed an agreement to further develop voice-technology products. The companies plan to incorporate Lernout & Hauspie's MT technology into future versions of Novell's Groupwise messaging and groupware systems. Lernout & Hauspie will also work with Novell to improve its own linguistic and knowledge databases. Meanwhile, Lernout & Hauspie plans to release its latest translation product, Coronado, over the Internet in the third quarter. Coronado aims to help non-English speakers to navigate through the Internet. Initial versions will support English, German, Spanish and French, with future versions expected for Chinese, Dutch, Italian, Japanese and Portuguese. Moravia Translations in Slovakia In March Moravia Translations opened a new, fully-owned office in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. Ingrid Pichlerova has been appointed Managing Director of the new subsidiary, the company's fourth office in Eastern Europe (the others are in the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary). Moravia Translations, whose headquarters are located in Brno, Czech Republic, now employs 120 full-time staff in the region. Up and coming issues on the research front include standardization, design and evaluation of controlled language systems. These will be tackled at the CLAW98 workshop to be held at Carnegie Mellon University, USA on May 20-21. Equal emphasis is to be given to both the academic and industrial perspectives and it is hoped that researchers, developers and users and potential users from around the world will be brought together. The two-day workshop will feature paper presentations, panel discussions, and a poster/demonstration session.
